An example is the gardening committee led by Robyn Curtis, where many have chipped in to clean and revegetate areas around the club and I might say it's looking great.

Reduce, Reuse, Recycle

Christopher Havre has set up a social enterprise to re-purpose PFDs that would other wise end up in landfill as they become "economically obsolescent" because of the need to have them professionally serviced regularly, which can cost more than the purchase price of a new one.

They have already re-purposed a series of these old jackets donated by Royals in Williamstown, and both Royal Brighton and Roal Melbourne Yacht Squadron have commenced mobilising to support the project.

If you'd like to get in touch with Christopher to recycle your PFDs, email him at chrishavre@yahoo.com.

A night to remember – Jack Beazley visits cousin “Dugga” Beazley

Jill and Brian Golland (Honorary Life Members and Past Commodores of QLYC), recently took the club’s old friend and member from the 1940’s, Jack Beazley on a nostalgic visit to Albert Park Yacht Club to meet and hear Jack’s cousin Dugga speak at a special event organised by the Wooden Boat Association. Jack had just celebrated his 93rd birthday some days earlier and this surprise included a meal at the Vietnamese restaurant “Po St” in Bay St before joining the group at the club.

Jack had not seen his cousin for some years and this meeting was very special, as almost everyone of the 30 odd people in the audience knew Jack and welcomed him as one of their long lost!

The evening was about Dugga and his wife Frances, daughter Karen, family, and fishing out of various design boats, including the old “couta” and “cliff” as the double enders that were famous around Port Melbourne and Williamstown waters from the early 1940’s.

Dugga had everyone enthralled with stories including one in which he and his brother both went overboard whilst the boat continued on only to be picked up after a fisherman saw Dugga’s boat without any crew and picked them up from a bouy which they had swum to and kept them afloat.

A great night with memories for Jack and all who attended!
